Dance with the Steers at the Amador County Fair
battle of the bands
One of the best county fairs in all of California is back! Grab your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie with the bisons because the Amador County Fair will be nonstop excitement. There will be multiple stages complete with live music and entertainment, shows, food vendors, wine tasting, a Survivor competition, and more! This year’s theme is Dancing with the Steers which is appropriate because dancing will take place throughout the entire 3-day weekend. There will be performances from bands like Erin McKinney, FreeZeout, After Dark, Crystal Image, Electra Road Band, Tess and the Trash Hipsters, and many more! There will also be a rodeo, demolition derby, hot rod truck pulls, and the best part – corn dogs!
In preparing for the fair, there is a fun musical competition that takes place before the actual fair itself. On July 2 at noon, the Amador County Fair Foundation is putting on the Amador Fair Aid Music Festival near Jackson. The event is essentially a battle of the bands, in which 14 great local acts will compete to be named Amador’s favorite band. Those in attendance will be able to vote for their top picks and the winner will play a set at the Amador County Fair on July 31. This battle of the bands will also have free carnival rides for kids and lots of other family-friendly activities.
The Amador County Fair first started in 1938 when the fair’s exhibit supervisor hunted down pieces of city history to use in the construction of the fairgrounds. The beautiful glass window, marble barber sink, and breathtaking breakfront are all the results of her efforts. Her creative talents are responsible for the fairgrounds’ successful layout today as well which includes easy pedestrian routes, vendor access, and other livestock and carnival needs. In the past, funding for the fair has always come from State funds but when Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that completely eliminated state funding, the existence and continuation of the fair became threatened. It will now depend on more sponsors and help from the members and the Board. So come out and support the Amador County Fair and don’t forget your grooving hooves to dance with the steers!
